EnterNet NOW, Inc.'s Netiquette

  1. The first thing to remember is, you will never know it all. Technology and the Internet changes daily, sometimes even hourly. We all are going to be learning new things all the time. So don't ever be embarrassed that you don't know something, because you probably know something the author of this article doesn't know!

  2. NEVER TYPE EVERYTHING IN ALL CAPS! When you type in all caps it is considered that you are yelling at someone. Now if, of course, you do want to yell at someone, you would type in all caps. But remember it is impolite to ever yell. Except of course if someone is making an unacceptable advance to you, then YELL TO YOUR PARENTS to come and help, but NEVER ever reply to him or her!

  3. Compress or zip those big files! When you send someone a picture or a large document, remember that it takes a long time to download them, so zip them up! If you don't have zip software, you can get a basic version free at; http://www.pkware.com/ or http://www.winzip.com/

  4. BCC those emails will ya! When you send an email to several friends, remember to use the BCC (BCC means blind carbon copy). By placing the email addresses in BCC you can send the email to many different friends at one time, but you keep everyone's email address private. Remember, email addresses are like phone numbers. They are private and should not be given out to the world! I promise your friends will love you for this.

  5. Stop forwarding that chain letter around! Do not forward chain letters around. No one likes chain letters. Many times they are hoaxes. Remember the more shocking a chain letter seems the more likely it is a hoax. A couple of good web sites to check for hoaxes are: http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/, http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blhoax.htm, http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html, and http://www.snopes2.com/

While we are on the subject, let's remember to ask your friends if they want you to forward jokes to them. Not everyone likes to receive all those jokes. Better yet, maybe you should not send jokes at all, remember some jokes hurt peoples feelings...

  6. Never give out personal information. NEVER EVER (yes I am yelling, want to make sure you hear me) give out your personal information or anyone else's personal information that you might have. Internet safety is reliant on us all making good choices. Giving out your personal information or someone else's is never ever a good choice. Personal information means phone number, full name, address, school name or address, parents name, credit card or bank information, or anything else that might help some bad guy find you or gain access to your property.

  7. Stop that SPAM! Do not send unsolicited commercial emails to people that you do not know. This means never ever folks! You may ask someone if you can contact him or her before you try to sell to him or her, but if they say no, then stop!

  8. Make sure your computer is protected! Make sure your computer has virus protection and that you keep it up to date. That way you can stop those viruses in their tracks. When you get a virus warning, delete it immediately! Do not forward the email or reply to it. Delete it in all cases. Then remember to delete and cleanout your trashcan. Once you have deleted it, you can send a new and clean email to the person that sent you the email and politely tell them that you received an email from them that had a virus. Politely means do not yell at them, they didn't mean it….
